Mvelase Needs Your Help

Mvelase Needs Your Help!

Mvelase (28) was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia after being placed on oxygen due to severe breathing difficulties. His only hope for a second chance at life lies in finding a matching stem cell donor - and that could be you. Register today to become a stem cell donor.

As a father to a two-year-old daughter, Mvelase’s greatest wish is to be there to raise her. However, he began experiencing bouts of dizziness and struggled to complete his daily tasks. When he lost his appetite, he decided it was time to visit the nearest clinic in his home village in the Eastern Cape.

In February 2024, Mvelase returned to Cape Town, where his family is based, hoping that a change of environment might ease his symptoms. But as his condition worsened, he sought further medical help. It was during this time that he was placed on oxygen at Mitchell’s Plain Hospital after struggling to breathe - a moment that made him realize something far more serious was going on.

Mvelase was transferred from Mitchell’s Plain Hospital to Groote Schuur Hospital, where further tests confirmed his diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. He spent an initial three months in the hospital, from May to July, receiving treatment.

Currently, his treatment involves regular blood transfusions and chemotherapy, requiring week-long hospital stays. Despite his family being tested as potential donors, none were a match for Mvelase.

Right now, Mvelase has one wish: “I just want to be able to raise my 2-year-old daughter and see her grow. If anyone can give me just that little gift, I would be so grateful”.
