At just 14 years old, Iminathi's world has been turned upside down by a diagnosis no child should ever face: Aplastic Anemia. Now, he is in desperate need of a matching stem cell donor. That donor could be YOU!
His journey began in 2020 with what seemed like a harmless flu and a constantly blocked nose. His mother, Akhona, initially thought it was just a common cold or maybe even COVID-19. But when his eyes turned yellow, and his nosebleeds became frequent, her concern turned into fear.
With hospitals overwhelmed during the COVID-19 pandemic, Akhona felt frustrated as her son’s condition worsened. His grandparents fetched him from Johannesburg, hoping a trip to his paternal family in KwaZulu-Natal would help him recover. Sadly, Iminathi collapsed on the way.
While schools were closed in 2020, Akhona wasn’t too worried about him missing classes. But when they reopened in 2021, Iminathi couldn't return because his health had declined drastically.
Today, Iminathi relies on bi-weekly blood transfusions at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital to feel better. His mother had to leave her job to care for him full-time, and now she’s pleading with South Africans to come forward and register as stem cell donors.
You can give Iminathi hope for a bright future. Register to become a stem cell donor and help give him a second chance at life.
Remember, all costs related to the donation process are taken care of by DKMS Africa. You will not be asked to pay for anything.
