Cape Town, 31 March 2025 – This past week, in collaboration with DKMS Africa, WeWork, a global provider of coworking spaces and office solutions hosted a Blood Stem Cell Donor Day across its three locations: Cape Town, Rosebank, and Sandton. The Blood Stem Cell Donor Day is a DKMS Africa-facilitated initiative aimed at rallying companies to get involved in the fight against blood cancer and disorders.
The engagement saw WeWork South Africa’s stakeholders and tenants learn more about blood cancer and disorders, register to become potential stem cell donors, explore the realities of the lived experiences of blood cancer and disorder patients and caregivers through patient stories, as well as discover alternative ways to get involved.
“Our community and network is always eager to contribute meaningfully to causes such as cancer. Upon learning of the different ways to get involved pertaining to blood cancer and disorders specifically, we chose to start by hosting Blood Stem Cell Donor Day. It allowed us to learn more about these life-threatening conditions and how we can contribute to positive patient outcomes,” Stefano Migliore, Chief Executive Officer at WeWork South Africa.
Since the Blood Stem Cell Donor Day initiative was launched, DKMS Africa has collaborated with organizations spanning various industries which has contributed to diversifying the donor registration pool.
Observing the significance of the initiative, DKMS Africa’s Head of Community Engagement and Communications, Palesa Mokomele, said; “Currently, 0,36% of South Africans are registered as blood stem cell donors, an increase from the 0.04% in previous years. Despite this, it is crucial for us to continue our education and awareness efforts in various spaces and industries. The donor registration pool’s growth is an ongoing commitment on our side. It is initiatives like the Blood Stem Cell Donor Day that really help us in this regard.”
