Themba Needs Your Help!

Themba, a 29-year-old from Mpumalanga Province, was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic syndrome and urgently needs your help. Give him a second chance at life by registering to become a blood stem cell donor!

Imagine putting in the hours to acquire your hard-earned qualification with the hopes of making a difference only to have your reality changed by a life-threatening illness. This is the case for 29-year-old Industrial Engineer, Themba who has been diagnosed with Myelodysplastic syndrome and now needs a stem cell transplant for a second chance at life.

The Diagnosis:

Themba's journey took a sudden turn when what seemed like a simple flu in June 2023 turned into something much more serious. Persistent fatigue and low energy led him to seek medical help, initially resulting in a prescription for iron supplements. However, as his condition worsened, he was referred to Grey’s Hospital in Pietermaritzburg and later to Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital, where he was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic syndrome in December 2023. The illness has forced him to leave his job in KwaZulu Natal, and he now relies entirely on his siblings for support. His initial round of chemotherapy was unsuccessful, making the search for a compatible stem cell donor even more critical

Reflections:

Reflecting on how his life has changed, Themba shared, "I was building a career and planning for a bright future, but everything came to a halt when I got sick." He urges others to get involved, saying, "Life is too short, and even if cancer hasn't touched you directly, please consider helping those who are in need." His story is a powerful reminder of how quickly life can change and the importance of community support in times of crisis.
