Eight-year-old Elam is facing a journey no child should have to endure. Diagnosed with Severe Aplastic Anaemia, his only hope for survival lies in finding a matching stem cell donor. Unfortunately, there’s no match for him yet on the registry. You can help change that by becoming a stem cell donor.
Elam’s mother, Khanya, first noticed something was wrong when Elam was accidentally hit by a stone while playing with friends mid-December, 2023. His eye quickly swelled shut, and, concerned about possible eye damage, Khanya rushed him to George Hospital where he received treatment.
Further tests revealed something far more serious. Elam was transferred to Red Cross Hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with Severe Aplastic Anaemia. Since then, he hasn’t been able to attend school, only managing a few days of Grade 2 before his illness took over.
Khanya has seen her once-active boy change drastically. “He’s less energetic, unable to play with his friends or even enjoy his video games, writing, or drawing,” she says.
Despite the tough times, Khanya speaks of the incredible support from her family.
Worried about her son’s future, Khanya’s heartfelt plea is for anyone who’s hesitant to register: “Giving someone a chance at life is fulfilling a purpose, and it will always be appreciated.”
